In my early teens I was a big fan of Choose Your Own Adventure books and read them over and over to ensure I read every possible combination of story. Choose Your Own Adventure books were one of the biggest success stories (excuse the pun) of the 1980s and they can still be purchased online or in plenty of op-shops and second-hand bookstores. However, as with many of the old ‘classics’, I find children look at these ‘old’ books with a mix of horror and amusement…have you tried to get a teen girl to read ‘The Babysitter’s Club’ or ‘Nancy Drew’ lately?!
So I was BESIDE MYSELF to see that Melbourne author, George Ivanoff, has started writing a series called ‘You Choose’, which is aimed at middle primary readers who love adventure with side serves of danger, magic and treasure. The books are fast paced, well written and place the reader smack bang in the middle of the action and able to make all the decisions about where to next. Young readers who love a good adventure/action series will love reading the ‘You Choose’ series once, twice and a third time, and I can also think of several reluctant readers who will be totally engaged.
I also love a book with a good dedication; I am as obsessed with book dedications as I am with picture book endpapers. ‘You Choose: Mayhem at Magic School’ is dedicated, ‘For the real Grandma Gwen, Matriarch of the Coffee Clan’. As a lover of good coffee myself, and with parents who have a firmly established Coffee Clan, this is now my favourite book dedication of the year thus far.
