I love nothing more than events themed around books – you may have noticed this if you follow me on social media:). All our birthday parties are book themed (see here for some) and I have been involved for years now with Story Arts Festival in Qld and the CBCA Brisbane branch events. So I am VERY EXCITED to be hosting the very first Brisbane ‘Nearly a Vet’ Convention at the school at which I work. This is the perfect event for animal loving young boys and girls from about 6 years+.
What is a Nearly a Vet Convention?
Bring a stuffed animal with you and come and join Rebecca Johnson, author of the bestselling ‘Juliet – Nearly a Vet’ series and the winner of the 2015 Prime Ministers Prize for teaching Primary School Science
and other ‘Nearly Vets’ as we practise our vetting skills and learn about the things real vets do. You’ll also get some tips on great story writing and character development.
All participants will receive a Nearly a Vet Kit to take home.
The ‘Juliet Nearly a Vet’ series is perfect for all animal loving, vet dreaming young readers and author Rebecca Johnson is an award winning Science teacher, so you can be assured that all animal information is pretty spot on – you can read more about her here. I am always happy knowing that someone with a bit of nous about them has written books which contain medical, Scientific or educational subjects.
Juliet is 10 and the series (of now 12 books) is perfect for independent readers from 7 or they could be read alouds from about 5 for animal loving little ones. We’ve been reading them as bedtime books for a while now and they suit both the girls, despite the age gap #winning.
‘Juliet Nearly a Vet’, of course, also fits rather beautifully with the push on girls in Science and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths). But more than this, it’s just a darned great series; well written; nice mix of fact and fiction; strong female characters abound…and there is lots in the series with more to come…so reading is sorted for months!
And thanks to Oh My Giddy Aunt you can also purchase a ‘My Pet’ sterling silver necklace – delivered at the event and a free hand engraved pet tag. Each ‘My Pets’ sterling silver necklace includes a favourite animal, or if you can’t choose just one, add as many as you like to tell your pet story.
