Girl Zone Book Club

Tonight was our first meeting of the year for Girl Zone Book Club – a group I run for Year Six students and a significant woman in their life – mother, aunt, grandma, older sister, cousin, family friend! This Book Club is an opportunity to talk, laugh and learn through a shared love of reading.

I run this book club much like an adult book club, just without the wine! Focus books chosen are ‘crossover’ novels, ones which both adults and adolescents can enjoy.

Tonight I spoke about the titles below and by popular consent we have chosen to go with ‘When You Reach Me’ as our first read of the year. We will share our thoughts on the book/s in the comments below this post. Please note that some of these books contain mature themes – check suitability for your child. For more books targeted at pre teen and teen readers please see my lists for readers 12 years+ here. For YA books for boys please see here.

To add any of these books to your home, school or library collection please click on the covers below.

the-forgotten-pearl‘The Forgotten Pearl’: please read my full review here and more about author Belinda Murrell here.

when-you-reach-me‘When You Reach Me’: read my full review of this book here.

one-perfect-pirouette‘One Perfect Pirouette’: read more about this book in my post ‘Top Ten Ballet Books’.

the-three-loves-of-persimmon‘The Three Loves of Persimmon’: Persimmon Polidori is a fine young lady, but within her is a rebel. She must follow her heart’s desire, even if it means her family will reject her for the choices she makes. These choices bring her adventure and a world she never knew existed – they also bring her loneliness…

Along the way, Persimmon undergoes the trials of love, heartbreak, doubt and the discovery of her own true value. And she does it with the aid of a tiny, brave creature named Epiphany. ‘The Three Loves of Persimmon’ is a joyous celebration of hope and the redeeming power of love.

Pookie Aleera‘Pookie Aleera is not my Boyfriend’: you can read my RAVE about this verse novel here.

I also recommended these titles to the adults – both of which are by Karen Foxlee, who has just written her first novel for younger readers, but these two are YA/adult titles.
