Tonight is Girl Zone Book Club – a group I run for Year Six students and a significant woman in their life – mother, aunt, grandma, older sister, cousin, family friend…even a dad or uncle will do. This Book Club is an opportunity to talk, laugh and learn through a shared love of reading. For more books targeted at pre teen and teen readers please see my lists for readers 12 years+ here. For YA books for boys please see here.

Book Clubs help us to…

Connect with others through a shared love of literature

Discuss the big ideas and messages in literature

Personally connect with a story or character

We have been reading ‘The Forgotten Pearl’ by Belinda Murrell, one of my favourites in her series of time-slip novels set in Australia.

We are now reading ‘Amal Unbound’, which is a great story of bravery in the face of adversity for readers 10+. Saeed’s writing is skillful and full of soul; the story of Amal’s struggle to get an education is a compelling and eye-opening read.

About the Book

Twelve-year-old Amal loves learning and dreams of becoming a teacher.

Then something unimaginable happens—after an accidental run-in with the son of her village’s corrupt landlord, she is forced to work as his family’s servant to pay off her own family’s debt.

At the opulent and corrupt Khan estate, Amal realises she will have to find a way to work with others in order to bring about change, and to achieve her dreams.

Inspired by Malala Yousafzai,’Amal Unbound is a heartwarming story for brave girls everywhere.
