Book Party: Miffy
Home »
I rarely deviate from the ‘Women’s Weekly Birthday Cake Book’ when doing birthday cakes – except when there is a book themed cake to be made!
PudStar’s second birthday was all about Miffy, and the theme was in fact more about me really as I have loved Miffy since my nan made me pyjamas with Miffy on the moon appliqued on them back in the 80s. At two, PudStar was still so easily talked into a party that I wanted – and she did kind of like Miffy after being flooded with the books. How great is that small window of time when you can talk your child into a party theme?

We have a bit of a Miffy thing happening in this house, and these days it is not just because of me. My sister married a lovely Belgian boy, and they have a lovely Belgian/Australian daughter. Miffy – or Nintje in Dutch – is huge in Belgium and The Netherlands – home of Dick Bruno the author/illustrator, and we’ve been happy to be on the receiving end of Miffy/Nintje themed gifts.
Two is a fab age to introduce Miffy books as the bold images and simple text are just right – ChickPea regularly brings me a Miffy book to be read. Sadly the girls do not know the joy that is Miffy on the moon appliqued pyjamas – and nan seems uninterested in recreating them, though they do have Miffy shirts see #dodgyiphonephoto below!
It should be noted that while the books are some of my all time favourites, and absolute classics – you may have some raised eyebrows at some of the 70s ideas – especially Mother Bunny and her lovely housekeeping and the angel who comes to deliver Baby Miffy (PudStar: “I thought babies came in tummies?”). But they are really just gorgeous and they have remained insanely popular with children and adults alike. We have every single one in the series as well as some of mine from my childhood. You can see and purchase a range of Dick Bruno Miffy books here and there are also fabulous Miffy DVDs here.
