Reading Lists for Nine Year Olds +

Reading lists for children are a great way to encourage them on their literacy journey. Reading lists are perfect for encouraging reluctant readers to ‘have a go’, or for having a ready supply of book suggestions for avid readers.

List love

It’s no secret that I love a list. I think it’s the librarian in me. I love lists nearly as much as my long-time teacher librarian friend and colleague, Kristen. Her lists are a joy to behold. I feel calm just being near a Kristen List. I love the way she ticks things off her list with such confidence. When one list is finished a page is turned in her non dog eared notebook and another list is made.

My lists are nowhere near as nice as Kristen’s. Mine are scrawled on all manner of things, and I never ever seem to finish them like Kristen does.

Instead I just seem to collect lists in my handbag, my iPhone and on my desk. Then I get really stressed about my lists, then I have a little meltdown, and then I throw out the scrappy lists and the process starts all over again. One day my lists are going to be just like Kristen’s. It’s one of my aims in life.

Reading lists for children

Despite my own list craziness, I’ve created some lovely reading lists for you, and I’m sure you’ll enjoy ticking books off them. Because everyone loves a good reading list. There are also four lists of suggested reading for twelve year olds +.

Reading lists can be given to grandparents for present ideas, can be taken to your local library to place books on hold, or used as a shopping list whether you’re shopping with Booktopia, Amazon, Book Depository or your local independent bookstore.

Whilst I don’t like the idea of ‘boys books’ and ‘girls books’  – having worked at single sex schools for many years now (boys first, now girls) I am very aware there are actually some distinct differences in reading preference. However there are also many, many titles which will suit both sexes. So I’ve not labelled my lists ‘boys’ and ‘girls’…I’ve just made some slightly more girl focussed, and some slightly more boy focused. You’ll get the idea!

The link to a PDF of each list is above each image.
