Review of the ‘That’s Not My…’ Series

Home » Review of the ‘That’s Not My…’ Series

I’m sure there is not a parent who does not know these books. I resisted them for so long as I’m usually not a fan of books which seem churned out one after the other.  But in need of a distraction one day I purchased ‘That’s Not My Fairy’…and so began a book crush. Now I just wish I was the person who conceived this idea. Fiona Watt and Rachel Wells may indeed churn them out, but by golly they are an inspired idea and a quality production. My humble apologies for misjudging! All titles in the series can be purchased here.

That's Not My Puppy

I have lots of ‘coffee shop packs’ that I take with me to give me fifteen minutes peace to wolf down a coffee and cake/biscuit/muffin/toast/anything with sugar, and I now also take one or two of these…gives me at least five more minutes.

They are perfectly pitched at their very young audience: board book; simple but bold pictures, touchy feely parts on each page; repetitive text; known concepts (mostly).

They are also great for older siblings who are just starting out on reading. PudStar is confident that she can ‘read’ these books to ChickPea and her much loved one year old cousin. She reads the pictures without needing the text, although the much repeated line ‘that’s not my…’ is now words and a sentence she can read anywhere…perfect for building confidence in a new reader.

Pud Reading

PudStar set up an outdoor mat with our collection, and her loved reading snake: surprised she let them anywhere near her snake given she spent a good half hour complaining about their banana and mango smelling hands and faces. They spent a happy afternoon engaging with these books, and they were not under my feet! Towards the end Pud got a little violent about showing her cousin how to feel the feely bits…then collapsed ‘exhausted’ and pretended she was asleep to ignore them. But we got at least two hours on and off out of her set up!

'Asleep'...exhausted

I also spied this one…too funny! I am getting this next time I do an order.

Even Rex Dog was invited to read. That poor dog gets books shoved in his nose too often.
